There is no alternative but delight for Delia

First Friday blog and it is with a heavy heart that those radicals wanting to see a fundamental change to the way the voting system in the UK works will admit defeat. Many are blaming the 'Clegg-effect'. Poor old Nick Clegg, who swept into public affection just over a year ago in the televised election debates, is now the fall guy for anyone who has a gripe with the Coalition Government. Was the vote ever going to be anything but a 'no', when the majority of the voting population saw it as Nick's personal goal. Ed Miliband could have been more supportive, but in the end, Nick's percieved renege on his pre-election promises meant that he was never going to carry this one.
It was also a bad day for the Lib Dems in local elections across the country - the Nick effect again? More than likely, there is no doubt it has hurt the local councillors in real seat terms.
Obama may have done his election chances some good by the wipe out of Osama Bin Laden but has the US military stirred up a hornets nest in the process and just why were our troops in Afghanistan?
Good week for QPR and Delia Smith's beloved Norwich as they seal their promotion to the football Premiership. Very good week for Man Utd as they appear to be one point away from winning the league. Good week for cricket as Alastair Cook is made one day captain and Stuart Broad 20/20 captain. Strauss remains test match captain. Poor week for Andy Murray - will he ever win a major? and West Ham - will they ever fill their new stadium?
